WHAT IS OZONE

Ozone is the tri-atomic form of oxygen and is a highly effective disinfectant. As an oxidizing agent, ozone is one and a half times more powerful than chlorine and 3000 times more reactive.

Ozone is a safe, extremely vigorous disinfectant and oxidizer, therefore, it is used to control unwanted organism growth. Ozone does not act as a systemic poison to microorganisms, but rather, destroys them through the process of oxidation. Consequently, it is impossible for a microorganism to build up any resistance to oxidation.

Ozone (from the Greek “ozein”, smell) is a molecule consisting of three oxygen atoms (O3).Ozone naturally occurs as a blue gas with an acrid and pungent smell and its concentration in the atmosphere is about 0.04 ppm (1 ppm ~ 2 mg / m3). This gas is formed naturally in the stratosphere and in particular in the ozonosphere, concentrating at about 25 km above the sea level.

Powerful electrical discharges and UV radiation (hv), having a wavelength (λ) of less than 242 nm, dissociate molecular oxygen in atomic oxygen by the Chapman Reaction:
O2 + hv → O + O

The atomic oxygen quickly combines with another oxygen molecule to form the triatomic molecule of ozone (O3).

Consequently, the reactions of formation and photolysis of O3 have the effect of protecting the Earth from more than 90% of the harmful UV radiation for life on our planet.
